Barry Grant (MAPCP), B.A. Degree in Counselling Skills & Addiction Studies
I qualified as an addiction counsellor in July 2011 and became a fully accredited member of the Association of Professional Counsellors & Psychotherapists in Ireland (APCP) in December 2012.
I began specialising in gambling addiction in 2015 and founded the charity 'Problem Gambling Ireland' in 2016. That same year, I won a Social Entrepreneurs Ireland (SEI) Elevator Award for my work with the project.
I developed Ireland's first accredited Continuous Professional Development training program for problem gambling, in 2017 and it was accredited by the Nursing & Midwifery Board of Ireland, that year. I have delivered that training to many organisations, including: HSE, the Gaelic Players Association, Ballyfermot Local Drug & Alcohol Task Force, Exchange House and Dublin Simon Community.
I have made presentations on problem gambling and gambling regulation to: the Northern Ireland Assembly; the Oireachtas Justice Committee; the Irish Congress of General Practitioners; the Royal College of Surgeons and many others.
I have delivered player protection training to both land based and online gambling operators.
I have contributed to the development of the UK's National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) Guidelines on Harmful gambling: identification, assessment and management
I have been interviewed well over 100 times by national and local media outlets on the topics of problem gambling and gambling regulation. Outlets include: The Irish Times, The Irish Independent, The Irish Examiner, The Journal, RTE Drivetime, RTE Morning Ireland, Newstalk Breakfast, Matt Cooper, Virgin Media News and others.
Most importantly, I have worked with hundreds of people who were struggling with severe gambling problems, who are now in stable recovery.
